RIBERA DEL DUERO. DAY TRIP FROM MADRID

We will leave Madrid in the morning around 9.00 am towards Ribera del Duero admiring the scenery of this beautiful rural region along the way. In the morning we will visit two wineries with wine tasting included. We will always try to combine two different style wineries, modern with traditional or small family-owned with larger producers. We will probably visit at least one with old cellars and one surrounded by vineyards. We will be given a comprehensive tour of one of the wineries, visiting the facilities and being guided through the process and secrets of wine making, from the grape to the bottle. This will be both an educational and fun experience.

After the visits we will enjoy a well deserved lunch where we’ll try the traditional and famous roasted lamb of Ribera, perfect companion for the Ribera wine. Lunch will be a three course meal with wine and coffee. We’ll try to have lunch in a winery or a winery – restaurant.

After lunch we will enjoy some of the history of Castilla, we will visit the small walled town of Peñaranda protected by the medieval castle with the Palace of Zúñiga y Avellaneda from the 16th century, and the old pharmacy owned by the Ximeno family since 1685, which is one of the best kept secrets of the region. A walk in its streets will bring you back in time. Alternatively we may visit the town of Peñafiel, and its magnificent castle from the 11th century, home of a newly opened wine museum. And back to Madrid where we will arrive around 8.00 pm.

The wineries we visit will depend on the day of the tour and will be confirmed when reservations are made.

The wineries that we usually visit are Ismael Arroyo, Viña Pedrosa, Cillar de Silos, Tarsus, Pesquera, Viña Mambrilla, Durón, Callejo, Matarromera, Arzuaga Navarro, Torremilanos, etc. Not all of them are available everyday. You can suggest any other winery you may want to visit and we will try to accommodate your suggestions.

I used this particular tour operator (Vintage Spain) to help me arrange a customized tour. We had a rental car and drove from region to region but Vintage Spain set up our lodging in each of the wine regions. Furthermore, although we had a rental, we didn't want to drive during our tours of wineries because we wanted to drink. Vintage Spain arranged it so that our guide would pick us up at our hotel and drive us to the wineries. The guide acted as our translator as well.

Christina arranges the tours for English speakers (I think she may be the owner). She is very organized and extremely professional. Everything went off without a hitch. What impressed me the most is who she uses as guides. To call them "tour guides" would be insulting because each person we had worked in some capacity in the wine industry. They all not only knew a lot about Spanish wine, they knew a lot about wines from all over the world and how it was produced. Their English was excellent (one was a Brit expat) and they were all enjoyable people to spend time with.
Finally, the restaurants selected were very good. Also, we were given the option of budget, midrange, or luxury accommodations. We chose midrange and were very pleased with the quality and cleanliness - mostly quaint B&Bs.
