Priorat is now one of the most interesting wine regions in Spain. The old traditional Priorats used to be rough, and strong wines, but since the 1990s things have changed, and now the best wines from this region are some of Spain’s most sophisticated and sought-after reds. It became a DOC in 2001, although it was a DO since 1975.

The most important factor in these wines is a spectacular terroir with hillside vineyards with poor soils and low yielding old vines and the famous llicorella soil, the black slate soil that Priorat has. The main grapes are Garnacha (known elsewhere as Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), existing a few old vines that are used in the best Priorat wines.

We will start driving early in the morning from Barcelona. We will visit two of the most representative wineries in the Priorat region and have lunch in the restaurant of one of those wineries if it is possible.
